I cannot even count the number of times I am asked, “What exactly is it that you DO?” when the subject of jobs comes up in conversation. Obviously, I don’t go to work every day. I’m a stay at home mom with a bunch of kids and I own my home, car and come and go as I please.
I’m sure that there are a lot of misconceptions running rampant in the minds of my Facebook friends, local neighbors and acquaintances. I KNOW that there are misconceptions when it comes to many of my family members and friends, no matter how long I have been doing what I do – part time 9 years and full time 5 years.
Today, I will answer, in part, the question that I am asked so many times: What exactly is it that you DO?
MLM is the acronym for multi level marketing. (Now, don’t get your panties in a bunch, here) Simply put, it’s a way to deliver products by utilizing the power of people. These products and services are usually not sold through regular stores, but from individual homes of the sellers.
Those who get involved with this type of marketing can typically make a lot of money based on two factors. The first being their ability to work hard, and the second being their ability to stay connected, nurture and motivate their down-line or distributors.
The way income is earned is like this example: John joins a company offering people a great product. He gets involved with them, starts earning commissions and begins to enjoy a better financial outlook for his life.
His neighbor Bob sees how well John is doing and he wants in on the action, too. John takes Bob under his umbrella of mentor-ship, teaching him how to be successful selling the product. Because of John’s tutelage, Bob also beings to earn money. A certain percentage of what he sells is then given to John in the form of a commission.
Bob then shares his story of making money with his family and friends. Three of them sign up. Now Bob is making commission based on what they sell. Meanwhile, John is still making commission on what Bob sells but now, he’s also earning on what Bob’s down-line sells.
So each tier or level will grow – depending on the amount of distributors who also desire to sell the product. The more levels you have working below you, the more money you’ll earn.
In MLM, the income level has the potential to reach great heights – but only if it’s properly worked. Those who sit around and do nothing to promote the product or the opportunity usually don’t fare well. And this is why so many people get all up in arms, shouting ‘Pyramid Scheme’ from the rooftops in their loudest, most ill informed voice.
So, let’s think about this for a moment…
Get My Point??
There’s no lazy way to success in any business and this one is no different. How much money you can earn through this type of selling structure will also depend on how the company has set up their commission scale – plus the percentage of commission made from your downline.
Since the rate of potential commission can vary from opportunity to opportunity, if you are looking into becoming an entrepreneur through this method you’ll want to check out the company and the success of others who are already promoting the products to make sure it’s the right MLM company for you. Any person who claims that by joining their company you’ll get rich overnight or that you’ll get rich without having to lift a finger is a company you should avoid getting involved with.
Just because you know someone who has tried and failed at a particular MLM or Direct Sales business does not mean that it is some kind of scam or pyramid scheme. A person’s success depends on THEM! You can put all of the correct tools for a project in anyone’s hand but unless they learn to use them and then actually take action by doing what they are supposed to do, that project will never get done, am I right?
Look, I may be doing something different, but I’m doing what is right for me. I’m successful at it, I am fulfilled by it and I get amazing satisfaction from helping others learn how to live their lives on their own terms instead of having their schedule and income potential dictated by some other person. And the reason I am successful at what I do is because I work hard!
Know how hard you work at that job you hate with only the possibility of MAYBE getting a 10 cent raise next year? Yeah, that’s not for me. What I do is determine my own paycheck by the amount of work I want to put into my own business. Now, THAT, to me, is FUN!
And by doing that, I’m able to be the mother and the person that I want to be. Getting better every day, baby!
Honestly, this is just a quick and simple answer to the question, “What exactly is it that you DO?” However, if you would like more information, a more in-depth conversation or to talk about what your options are in this career of mine, feel free to get in touch with me any time!
