I’ve dealt with my share of bad news. I don’t care who you are, life’s gonna knock you down once or twice. It’s a wild ride of both great and horrible surprises, but you simply can’t spend all your time worried about or expecting bad things to happen.
What kind of life would that be? Paralyzing, probably.
You’ve got to learn how to be tough. Resilient. Cool and calm in the face of pressure instead of some babbling, “Poor Me” whining drama queen.
Some things that have helped me to deal with the ups and downs of life are below. Maybe they’ll help you, too.
Learn To Expect The Unexpected. People get this twisted. I don’t mean to expect everything to go wrong all the time. I just mean to not let it get your panties in a bunch if something DOES happen. Like, say a friend cancels on you at the last minute. Or that bonus that you were expecting didn’t come through. Stop allowing things like that to spit chunks on your entire mood! Just roll with the punches.
Have Someone You Can Vent To. This is very important. All you need is one person to whom you can go and say whatever you want to without feeling judged. I have a few of these. I make sure not to use the same one too many times in a row or they will get sick of me, lol. But, you know – sometimes we really just need to blow off some of our thoughts through venting. Once we do, we feel much better and can deal with the problem rationally.
It’s All In Your Mind. Really, it is. You decide how you are going to react to whatever happens to you. I know that we all are prone to acting out without thinking once in awhile. We have knee-jerk reactions sometimes and yeah, that’s life. But, if you make a conscious effort to examine how you behave and what your emotions are doing BEFORE you go off on some kind of crazy-ass rant, you’re doing great. Take a deep breath. Think before you act. Stop yourself from reacting without getting yourself under control. That’s called being a grown-up.
So, there you have it. Master those three things and you’ll be able to handle bad news like a badass. Chances are you’re going to have to go through some bad times to work through all these, but if you keep them in mind and prepare yourself for the next ‘bad thing’ that comes along, you’ll be one step ahead.
Keep on keepin’ on!
